Soothe the Baby

  • Toddler

Objectives:
  • Children will experience showing empathy and respect for others through pretend play with support from an adult. 

CDA Competency Standard: ​
11.9.4b
  • Candidate helps children experience sympathy/empathy and respect for others.
B) Discusses diversity comfortably when interacting with children.

Materials: 
  • Baby Doll ​  
Procedure: 
  • Show children appropriate ways to soothe and care for the baby doll.
  • Pretend that the baby is crying and coach the children in appropriate reactions and actions to help soothe and comfort the baby doll.
  • Use kind words and gentle actions to model the appropriate behaviors and let the children try. Infants will require additional help doing this. 
Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the children’s interactions with the baby doll while trying to calm and soothe it. Record these observations over time. Were they appropriate? Did they improve over time?
