On the following pages are lesson plans that can be used to integrate Positive Interactions in your program planning. The lesson plans are intended to be an optional resource that you may adapt for use in your classroom.  The worksheets at the bottom of each lesson plan are part of the required coursework (not optional).

Friendship Charades

​Age Group: ​
  • Preschool

Objectives:
  • Children will practice showing sympathy, empathy and respect for others as it relates to friendships 

CDA Competency Standard: ​
11.9.4b
  • Candidate helps children experience sympathy/empathy and respect for others.
B) Discusses diversity comfortably when interacting with children.
Materials: 
  • Book: That's What a Friend Is! by P. K. Hallinan ​​
Procedure: 
  • Read the book That's What a Friend Is! by P. K. Hallinan  to your preschool group, pointing out the positive ways that friends help each other and interact.
  • Next, invite a child to stand and act out a certain emotion or situation. Encourage another child to react to this child as a friend would, being kind and helpful.
  • Lastly, explain that these are great ways to practice being a good friend and challenge children to continue to be good friends at recess, lunch, in the classroom and more! 
Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the children’s interactions with one another. Record these observations over time. Were they appropriate? Did they improve over time?
