Common Questions and Comments

"If I add more children with special needs to my program, how will I meet the needs of all the children in my program?" – Kathleen
There will always be an adjustment period to consider when adding new children to your program. It will also be a process of readjusting your program to fit the individual’s needs and preparing for the accommodations that may need to be made. A few suggestions include:
  • Communicate every day with parents about their child's needs
  • Plan ahead for activities to be sure all students are included and accommodated
  • Adjust the child's schedule to fit their developmental needs
  • Keep child-to-teacher ratios at a comfortable level for the experience level of the teacher
  • Take the time to learn about each of the children and what they may find aversive, enjoyable, or skills you wish to help them improve upon

"Is it possible to have too many children with special needs in my classroom? How do I know what ratio to use?" - Oscar
Having most of the children in a classroom requiring special accommodations may seem like a daunting or unrealistic task. It is recommended to keep the classroom ratio of children with special needs to children without special needs at a natural level. This means keeping the ratio at the level of the general public or community. This should be the decision of the educators in the classroom as to what ratio they feel comfortable with while still providing professional care to all of their students.
