Using ABC Chart to Prevent Biting Behavior

Page 13

There can be many reasons as to why biting occurs in a classroom. The ABC Chart can help determine what factors you can change to control or prevent the behaviors.

Some things to consider:

Picture
Daily Schedule
Schedule considerations may be made to prevent anxiety and other feelings which may lead to biting.
Picture
Toys and provided materials
Providing ample toys for children in the classroom can help prevent common toy stealing or boredom biting behaviors.
Picture
Create a safe environment
Along with following licensing requirements for safety in the classroom, encourage a positive and safe environment for all children.
Picture
Avoid major change
Changes can upset a  child’s sense of security which can lead to frustration, anxiety and other strong emotions that may trigger biting.
Picture
Engage children
Be sure that materials and activities are developmentally appropriate and engaging for all children so that children are not bored or frustrated which can lead to biting.
