What is Autism?

Page 2

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological disorder characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences.    The most important thing to remember about ASD is that it is a spectrum, meaning that it varies from person to person. Each child with autism can have vastly different needs and abilities.

Autism’s most obvious signs usually appear between the ages of 2 and 3, however, in some cases it can be diagnosed by a physician as early as 18 months. We will list and discuss these signs and developmental red flags a little bit later on in this training. The cause of autism is still unclear, but scientists are beginning to understand that autism has multiple, perhaps interlocking, causes.
As an educator, you will more than likely have a child on the autism spectrum sometime in your career. The information presented in this course will help you to become more familiar with the disorder, discover ways to better assist children in your care, and how to express developmental concerns with parents.
