According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “diagnosis of ASD now includes several conditions that used to be diagnosed separately: autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome. These conditions are now all called autism spectrum disorder”.

1 in 68 U.S. children has been identified with an autism spectrum disorder.

Approximately 40 percent of all children with ASD are nonverbal. This can make communication a challenge. We will discuss alternative ways to communicate later on in this course.
