Staying positive when managing a student’s behavior can often be a challenge for persistent or disrespectful children. Childcare professionals and teachers have had more than their fair share of experiences in situations where behavior management is required. It often stumps even the most seasoned professional. One proven method of behavior management is to use a positive approach. Positive behavior management focuses on the positive aspects of behavior as opposed to the negative. In the “old days” teachers would give out punishments for misbehavior and not necessarily support positive relationships and processes with their students. This created a corrective system where students did not learn from their experiences with misbehavior. The symptoms were treated, not the cause, if you will. Positive behavior management aims to create a relationship between teacher and student. This relationship should be based on a foundation of mutual respect and care.
