Applying What You Have Learned

On the following pages are lesson plans that can be used to support the development of emotional intelligence  in your program planning. The lesson plans are intended to be an optional resource that you may adapt for use in your classroom.  The worksheets at the bottom of each lesson plan are part of the required coursework (not optional).

Please read each lesson plan carefully and then answer the question at the bottom of the page.

Making Faces

​Age Group: 
  • Toddlers
  • Preschool 

Objectives:
  • Student will identify and name different feelings and emotions
  • Student will create a unique piece of artwork 
  • Student will develop fine motor skills   

CDA Competency Standard: ​
II.9.4a
  • Candidate helps children experience sympathy/empathy and respect for others
    • a) Helps children understand their feelings and the feelings of others 
Materials: 
  • cork pieces (cut into circles)
  • variety of beads
  • googly eyes
  • shells
  • glue
  • string
  • A variety of books that show faces and accompanying emotions 
Procedure: 
  1. Set out the materials in an appropriate area for creating.
  2. Invite students to create a face using the materials.
  3. While they are creating, ask the student what emotion their face has.  
Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the child’s ability to identify and name different feelings/emotions.
